The Muskegon Lumberjacks’ regular season got off to a rocky start on Friday night.
The Jacks traveled to USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth to face the Team USA Under-17 team, which they beat twice in the preseason.
But Team USA scored early and often and handed the Lumberjacks a 7-2 loss.
Team USA’s Spencer Stasteny opened the scoring 11:57 into the game. Oliver Wahlstrom and Patrick Giles also scored in the first period to stake the hosts to a 3-0 lead after one period.
Jake Pivonka and Joel Farabee scored in the second period to put Team USA up 5-0, despite being outshot by the Lumberjacks 24-15 at that point in the game.
Bode Wilde and Farabee scored in the first 5:12 of the third period to give Team USA a 7-0 lead.
Muskegon’s first goal of the season came at 7:01 of the third period, when Matt Steeves scored with assists from Anthony Del Gaizo and Bo Hanson.
The Lumberjacks’ Keenan Suthers capped the scoring at 16:52 of the third period with a power play goal. Jordan Timmons and Jachym Kondelik earned assists on the play.
The Lumberjacks outshot Team USA 31-28 in the game.
Muskegon will drive through the night to Bloomington, Illinois to face the Bloomington Thunder Saturday night.
