Local Sports JournalFor 25 years, Kyle Kurant was part of the volleyball program at Mona Shores.

Of those 25 years, 19 were as the Sailors’ head varsity coach. Tuesday morning, Kurant announced he is resigning his position.

“It has been a very long and difficult decision for me to make, but at this time, I think it might be best for me to step down as the varsity volleyball coach,” Kurant wrote in a statement to athletic director Ryan Portenga.

During his tenure as coach, Kurant elevated the program to its current stature on and off the court.”I am so fortunate to have so many great memories, relationships and to have been a part of such a great ride,” Kurant wrote.  “We provided so many great opportunities, challenges and experiences for young ladies and their families.”

One other feather in the cap of Kurant and the Sailor volleyball program is that for 19 straight years, the Sailors earned all-academic all-state.

“That is a tradition in our program that we are very proud of,” Kurant said.

“He’s a good man and a good coach,” Portenga said.
