After testing itself against one of the best teams in the state, the Fruitport soccer team can feel pretty good about itself.

The Trojans battled Grand Rapids Covenant Christian, which is ranked first in the state, to a 1-1 tie on Saturday.

The star of the match  for Fruitport was goalkeeper Conner Dennen, who made nine tough saves to keep the Trojans in the contest against a hard-charging Covenant Christian offense.Covenant Christian outshot Fruitport 11-5.

There was no score at halftime, and Fruitport drew first blood midway through the second half on a goal by Nick Carrier. The assist went to Ben Krammer on a set play from about 50 yards out.

Covenant Christian tied the game on a breakway goal by Travis Bouwkamp with just over nine minutes remaining.

“It was an even match of two skilled, fast and physical teams,” said Fruitport coach Greg Kobylak, whose team is now 3-2-3 on the season. “I can see why they are undefeated and ranked number one in the state.”

Covenant Christian is now 7-0-2.
