The Muskegon Community College women’s basketball used its defense and a hot hand in the first half to secure a 65-55 win over host Grand Rapids Community College on Friday.

Abby Rodriquez caught fire for MCC in the opening 20 minutes scoring 18 first half points of six 3-point bombs.

The Jayhawk run built it into a 40-26 halftime lead.

“We did a nice job playing through the ups and downs of the game tonight,” said MCC coach Rob Recknagle whose team forced 20 GRCC turnovers. “Regardless of how we shot the ball we played smart, tough defense, which was the difference tonight.”

Rodriquez paced the Jayhawks with 19 points while Katie McKinnon added 18 points. Taylor Brown had 10 rebounds and Morgan Giddings dished out 6 assists.

MCC returns home on Wednesday to play Kellogg Community College at 5:30.
