The Grand Haven football team came close but dropped a heart-breaker to Caledonia 28-27 in O-K Red action on Friday.

Caledonia got on the board first on a three-yard touchdown run from quarterback Caleb Bronkema. Grand Haven answered with a 64-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Collin Takas to Braydon Franz, and had a 7-6 lead after one quarter.

The Bucs had the only score in the second quarter on a 30-yard pass from Takas to Will McWatters. Grand Haven led 14-6 at halftime.

Caledonia’s Bronkema had the only score in the third quarter, tying the game at 14-14 going into the the fourth.

Nathan Paggeot caught a 10-yard TD pass from Bronkema, giving Caledonia a 20-14 advantage early in the fourth quarter. Takas answered with a 53-yard scoring run for the Bucs to tie the game.

Then the Bucs struck again, this time on an 82-yard run by Connor Worthington and took a 27-20 lead.

But Bronkema scored on a three-yard touchdown run late in the game, then converted the two-point conversion to ice the win for Caledonia.

Takas completed four passes on eight attempts for 145 yards for Grand Haven. Worthington led the Bucs in rushing, recording 94 yards on nine carries. Franz led the receivers with 64 yards on one reception. On the defensive side, Owen Krizan led the Bucs with 13 tackles.

The Bucs fell to 2-5 overall and 0-5 in the O-K Red. They travel to West Ottawa next week for another conference matchup.
