The Hart girls basketball team used defense and a big first quarter to top rival Shelby, 49-33 in a West Michigan Conference matchup.

Hart built a 16-2 first-quarter lead and led 30-11 at halftime while forcing 27 Shelby turnovers.

Addi Hovey led Hart with 19 points while Mariana VanAgtmael scored 17 points.

Missing from the Pirates’ stat sheet was Jayd Hovey who went down with a leg injury and later returned on crutches. 

Shelby’s Molly Schultz paced the Tigers with 14 points and steals while Kendall Zoulek had nine points and four assists. Ella Olmstead chipped in six points, two assists and three steals and Lauren Brown had eight rebounds.

Hart improves to 4-1 overall and is now 3-0 in WMC action. The Pirates next head Whitehall on Friday.

Shelby is now 3-2 overall and 2-1 in WMC play. The Tigers will visit Mason County Central on Friday.
