The ninth-ranked Muskegon Community College wrestling team finished 1-1 on Friday at Cornerstone University.

The Jayhawks dropped their first dual match of the season to third-ranked Indiana Tech University (NAIA) 34-6.

“Taking a loss like that stings when you’ve been enjoying nothing but success on the season so far, but it’s something we probably needed as we move toward next semester,” said MCC coach Mark Brunger. “That is a championship season.”

Coming out strong in the second dual, the Jayhawks defeated host Cornerstone 41-4 to wrap up the day’s event.

Alex Cantu (Orchard View) and Josh Kenny (Grandville) finished the day 2-0 while Kyler Kolk (Fremont), Gerrit Andrus (Reeths-Puffer) and Tyler Delooff (Lowell) went 1-0 in competition.

“The sky is still the limit for us, and it’s good that we got exposed a bit to help us show these guys why the small details matter,” Brunger said. “Make no mistake, though, we are much better then we showed today.”

MCC will take a break for the holidays and returns to host the Jayhawk Duals on Jan. 8.
