LEROY — Mason County Central’s wrestling team finished 2-3 at the Fallen Buck invitational at Pine River on Saturday.

The Spartans defeated Montabella, 52-12 and Central Montcalm, 48-18. Losses came against West Ottawa, 45-29; Pine River, 42-39, and Traverse City West, 42-42 on criteria.

“We wrestled real well as a team,” noted Spartans’ coach Trim Kendel. “We were in almost every dual. We still just struggle with the empty weight classes.

“I tell the kids just to work on what we can control, and work to win as many matches as we can, and to wrestle every second of every match.”

Going 5-0 on the day were senior heavyweight Andrew Quinn, freshman 112-pounder Hunter Sanford, senior 125-pounder Jacob Maidens and 130-pounder Zane McCabe.

Finishing 4-1 for the Spartans were senior Raiden Keefer at 189 pounds and freshman Colter Kirchner at 135.

“Colter had a good day,” Kendel said. “He has to wrestle up a weight because of our lineup, so to go 4-1 for him was a notable achievement.”

The Spartans next match is scheduled for Wednesday at Ravenna.
