MONTAGUE–The Montague Wildcats girls basketball team opened the season with a convincing 54-24 win over the visiting Comstock Park Panthers on Tuesday evening.

Montague raced out to a 12-0 lead before Comstock Park got on the board at the 2:36 mark of the first quarter and led 14-2 after the opening eight minutes of action. Montague never looked back.

The Wildcats held the upper hand in the second stanza, 13-11, to take a 27-13 halftime lead.

Montague outscored the Panthers 14-8 in the third quarter and 13-3 in the final eight minutes of play.

Junior Kendall Osborne led Montague with 14 points, eight rebounds, six steals and three assists. She was followed by senior Emma Peterson with 13 points, four rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Braylyn Bultema tossed in 10 points and grabbed four rebounds.

“First game for us and obviously there is a lot of first game jitters that go with it,” said Montague coach Nick Thaler. ‘I was really proud of how our girls played for the first game considering we only had eight practices. I thought we did a nice job.

“We’ve been working hard on a lot of different things especially defensively,” Thaler said. “With the group that we have we can ‘D’ up pretty well. We can be a pretty good team.”

Montague will be back in action on Friday as they play host to Orchard View.
