CUSTER — Mason County Eastern’s girls basketball team tipped off the season Tuesday night with a 55-41 home loss to Onekama. The game was a West Michigan D matchup.

The Cardinals had a 10-9 edge at the end of the first quarter, but then the Portagers outscored them, 16-13, in the second and went into the half with a 29-25 lead.

Onekama kept on rolling, outscoring the Cardinals, 14-7, in the third quarter to extend its advantage to a more substantial 43-32 margin. The Portagers closed out the game with a 19-11 advantage in the fourth period.

Lucy Shoup paced the Cardinals with 12 points, while Janessa Alvesteffer contributed 10 points, followed by Deanna Codman with six.

The Cardinals (0-1, 0-1 WMD) will travel to Bear Lake for another league game on Friday night.
