MANISTEE — A good defensive effort was wasted by the Manistee girls’ basketball team Monday night.

Host Manistee had a poor shooting night that led to a 44-36 nonconference loss to Frankfort.

Coming on the heels of a 59-40 win over Oakridge last Friday, the loss was disappointing for the Chippewas, who are expecting plenty of success this season.

“Frankfort’s girls were making the big shots when they needed them, and we couldn’t make them,” Manistee coach Kenn Kott said. “Whether they were the inside shots or the outside shots, they just didn’t fall very much for us tonight. We’ve played hard in every game so far, and I can’t fault the girls for that.”

The game was close throughout the first half. The Chippewas trailed 8-5 after one and 23-15 at the half.

Frankfort outscored Manistee, 13-10, in the third quarter and went into the fourth with an 11-point lead, 36-25, and then closed the game out with a 10-8 edge.

Abby Robinson scored 10 points to lead the Chippewas, while Allison Kelley had eight and Libby McCarthy seven. Grace Whitmer and Brooke Jankwietz each scored four points.

Manistee (2-2) returns to West Michigan Conference Lakes Division play on Thursday with a home game against Orchard View.
