Muskegon Heights jumped out to a 12-10 lead after the first quarter with Jaquan Matthews leading the way with eight points. Bradley Richards scored all 10 points for Calvary in the opening quarter.

The Eagles made a surge in the second quarter, sparked by six points from Quinn Swanson. Calvary led 26-22 at the half.

The lead grew to 41-33 after three quarters as Calvary had a 15-11 scoring advantage in the third quarter.

A patient style offense in the final quarter helped Calvary finish off the victory. In that final quarter, the Eagles made 14-of-20 free throws.

Richards led Calvary with 26 points and 15 rebounds. Gabe VanBaale had 15 points and 13 rebounds. Swanson finished with nine points. Ben Pollock had nine assists.

Matthews led Muskegon Heights with 14 points. Jonathan Moore added 12 and Edward Carter had 10.

“We are so proud of our boys for how they grew together as a close-knit unit,” said Brad Richards, whose team lost by a single point for Muskegon Heights in last year’s district title game. “This win tonight is for all the boys basketball players to ever put on a jersey for the Eagles.”

Calvary will take its 15-9 record into next week’s regional. It’s opponent, Lansing Christian also is 15-9.
