GRAND RAPIDS–The Muskegon Lady Big Reds are headed to the Division 1 district championship game after getting by the Grand Haven Buccaneers on Wednesday, 49-37.

The Big Reds will take on host Kenowa Hills, which defeated Reeths-Puffer in the other semifinal game.

On Wednesday, a balanced scoring attack by a trio of Lady Big Reds was something that Grand Haven couldn’t stop from the defensive side of the ball.

Muskegon senior Ty’Veonna Davis led the way with a game-high 21 points. Joining her in double digits were freshman Mariah Sain with 13 points and sophomore Bre’Asia Gamble-Jones with 10 points. Muskegon was plagued by a dismal 5-of-21 performance from the free throw line.

Muskegon jumped out to a 13-10 lead at the end of the first period with Davis leading the way with six points. The Lady Big Reds increased their lead to 22-14 by the halft as Davis scored five more points in the quarter.

Muskegon continued to extend its lead in the third quarter as Gamble-Jones scored seven points and Davis tossed in six more points. Muskegon led 40-21 after three quarters. Grand Haven held the upper hand, 16-9, during the final eight minutes.

Gillian Sorrelle led Grand Haven with 13 points while Emersen Berndt tossed in 11 points. Heidi Berkey scored eight points.

The Bucs finish the season 13-10.
