KENT CITY–The Kent City varsity girls’ soccer team earned their first victory of the season on Friday evening, beating Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills, 6-0.

The Eagles got on the board with 27 minutes left in the first half when freshman Lydia Howard sliced through the Bengal defense and fired a low shot that found the back of the net.

Sophomore Joandy Matias took advantage of a loose ball bouncing in the back and sent it home for Kent City’s second goal, which came 14 minutes after the opening goal.

Early in the second half, Howard scored her second goal of the game on a penalty kick drawn by Lila Volkers. Howard later paid Volkers back by assisting her goal.

The final two Kent City goals came off well placed penalty kicks by Susan Rau. Halfway through the second half, Rau placed a ball in the middle of the goal, where it bounced off several players from both teams. In the confusion, senior Kendyl Bjorkman tapped it in. Later, Rau scored on a penalty kick.
