BRETHREN — Kendall Zaverl recorded a hat trick as Shelby extended its winning streak to four straight with a 4-2 district soccer semifinal win over Buckley on Tuesday.

The game was played in Brethren.

Zaverl got the Tigers on the board just five minutes into the first half after receiving a pass from Aubrey Klotz for a 1-0 lead.

It remained that way over the next 33 minutes before Zaverl notched her second goal on a penalty kick to make it 2-0.

Just 30 seconds before the half, the Tigers scored again, as Zaverl pounded in a shot following a sharp pass by Alyse Erickson for a 3-0 cushion at the half.

Buckley spoiled the Tigers bid for a shutout when Aiden Romzek slid a shot past the keeper with an assist to Maddie Chilson.

The Tigers answered, however, with Kylie Brown finding the back of the net on an assist from Zaverl. That restored their three-goal lead, 4-1.

With just 23 seconds left in the contest, Buckley tallied its final goal, with Emma Cooper successfully converting a penalty kick.

The Tigers improved their record to 11-9-1 on the season and take on McBain Northern Michigan Christian (14-3-0) in the district finals at 5 p.m. Friday.
