MUSKEGON — For the fifth straight game, the Muskegon Clippers scored at least one run in the first inning.

And, for the fifth straight game, the Clippers went on to win the game. On Saturday night, the Clippers scored two runs in the opening inning and went on to defeat the Royal Oak Leprechauns, 6-2, in a game played at Marsh Field.

Through the first five games of the season, the Clippers have scored 12 first-inning runs.

On Saturday night, Muskegon scored on an error and a Braden Benton sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead.

In the second inning, another Leprechaun error led to another Clipper run. The second run of the inning came in on a single by Brandon Scheurer.

Muskegon made it 5-0 in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Colin Cornwell.

Royal Oak got on the board with single runs in the sixth and seventh inning to pull to within 5-2.

However, the Clippers struck again in the bottom of the eighth on Aaron Piasecki’s RBI single.

Piasecki and Danny Passinault had three hits each for the Clippers. Scheurer and Sam Lisiak chipped in two hits each.

Matthew Hoover was the starting pitcher and worked five innings. He allowed two hits and struck out eight. Gavin Sitarz pitched the final four innings and allowed six hits, two runs and he struck out four.

After five straight home games to start the season, the Clippers now hit the road on Sunday for a 7:05 p.m. game at Memorial Park Field in Royal Oak against the Leprechauns.
