BIG RAPIDS – Hart started off their volleyball season on Saturday and placed third in the Officials for Kids Tournament.
The tournament was played in Big Rapids.
The Pirates were impressive through pool play, going undefeated with two-set sweeps over Martin, Grand River Prep and Black River. Out of 20 teams, Hart earned the No. 2 seed which placed them in the Gold Division.
After falling behind in the quarterfinals of bracket play against Wyoming Potter’s House, Hart battled back to a dominant 25-10 victory in the second set. A 15-12 win in the third set advanced Hart to the semifinals where they fell to West Michigan Aviation Academy in three sets after starting out with a 1-0 lead.
The Pirates were led by junior Kelsey Copenhaver, who stuffed the stat sheet with a team-high 33 kills and 35 assists. Freshman libero Alayna Schiller put in 39 digs to lead the team and senior Gabby Schmieding earned 11 aces.
With a 4-1 start to the year, Hart will look forward to their next action on Monday, Aug. 28 when they travel to Carson City.
