LAKEVIEW – There was a lot of speed lost for Shelby boys soccer after Carson Claeys and Mason Garcia graduated in the spring, but the Tigers were able to find plenty of other contributors when they took down Lakeview, 8-0, to start their season on Wednesday.

Just one minute into the game, Shelby nearly scored on a Carson Stovall blast off the crossbar.

That set the tone for what was to come as just moments after, Stovall set up Ignacio Ortiz who netted a well-placed shot to put the Tigers up 1-0. Again, only a few minutes separated their next scoring opportunity with Alex Dealmonte sending a through ball to Alan Arreola, who in turn, skidded a shot past Lakeview’s keep.

Arreola went on to score another goal and was joined in the scoring spree by Mauricio Castillo, who totaled two, Ortiz who added two more for a total of three and Alejandro Perez.

The final goal of the evening was scored by Perez and put the final nail in the mercy rule finish.

Passing and communication was the key for Shelby. Six different athletes were responsible for assists with Ortiz and Arreola each put two on the board in addition to their multi-goal finishes.

“(It was a) great game by our defensive players. Nathan Miller, Isaias Cortina, Logan Selig and Zach Horton did not allow any shots on goal,” Shelby head coach Jairo Coronado said. “Castillo, Arreola and Ortiz distributed the ball very well on offense and defense along with Stovall, Trey Gauthier, Dealmonte, Wyatt Dickman and Venancio Cadena.”

The Tigers will be back in action at 5:30 p.m. Friday when they travel to Sparta for another non-conference game.
