FRUITPORT – The Mona Shores volleyball team had another successful tournament with an undefeated, first-place finish at the Fruitport Invitational on Saturday. 

In pool play, the Sailors took down NorthPointe Christian (25-15, 25-16) and North Muskegon (25-22, 25-17). 

The Sailors earned a first-round bye in bracket play and then went on to defeat Gull Lake (25-21, 18-25) in the semifinals and host Fruitport (25-23, 25-16) in the finals.

“It was an awesome day by everyone,” said Sailors’ coach Kathy Hellmann. “It was truly a team effort for the entire day.”  

Kyann Hellmann had 75 assists, 23 digs, eight kills, three aces and three blocks while Grace Allen added 37 kills, 31 digs and six blocks. Izzy Sturtevant had 30 digs with four aces and Jersey VanderWall had 18 kills and five blocks. 

Also, Laynie Russell chipped in 12 kills and 12 blocks. Kyli Geoghan had 15 digs and three aces.

The Trojans split pool play with a win against Montague (25-20, 25-16) and a loss to Gull Lake (14-25, 19-25). 

In bracket play, the Trojans beat Whitehall (25-21, 25-18) in the quarterfinals and Traverse City West (16-25, 25-22, 17-25) in the semifinal. 

“I have had some really high expectations for this group and today we became a real team,” said Fruitport coach Nicole Bayle. “Being successful at our home tournament was one of our goals this season and being in the finals was awesome.”

Sadie Haase had 39 kills and seven blocks while Gracelynn Olson had 83 assists, six aces and four blocks. Ashton Olson and Ellie Stroup contributed with 17 kills and 13 kills respectively. Lauren Riedel chipped in 62 digs with seven aces and Emma Fecher made 25 digs and five aces. 

Montague was 3-1 on the day with wins against Reeths-Puffer (25-14, 21-25, 15-5) and North Muskegon (30-28, 25-22) in pool play. The Wildcats fell to Fruitport, but defeated Gull Lake (25-22, 23-25, 15-13) in bracket play.

Alissa Wynn had 61 digs, seven aces and seven assists while Jordan Netcott had 33 digs, 22 kills and four aces. Jaelyn Sundberg threw in 81 assists, 14 digs and four aces.

Also, Reagan Cederquist contributed 16 kills, four aces and three blocks.

Mona Shores (17-3, 1-0) will see OK Conference-Green action on Tuesday when they host Muskegon.

Fruitport (7-9, 0-2) will be at Coopersville for a quad match on Tuesday.

Montague (6-9-2, 0-1) is set to play host to Orchard View on Tuesday.
