GRAND HAVEN–Grand Haven junior Valerie Beeck has been selected as the Local Sports Journal’s Girls Cross Country Athlete of the Month for August.
Beeck won the only race she has run this season (Aug. 25) when she won the 2023 Under the Lights Invite (Starlight Girls Division) at Grand Rapids South Christian High School. She finished with a time 18:46.30. The field consisted of 224 runners.
“Valerie is showing a lot of progress in her cross country career,” said Grand Haven girls cross country coach Scott Przystas. “She is gaining confidence in every race and is really beginning to trust herself and what she is capable of. Valerie is a lot more comfortable on the track, but we are starting to see her bring that confidence to the cross country course.
“Her performance in her first race of the year was an overall win and in the top seven all time races in our program’s history,” Przystas said. “More than the athlete she is, Valerie is growing as a vocal leader on the team. It is beneficial to the program when your fastest runner is also one of the hardest workers. She is a great role model for others on the team.”
