ADA – Mona Shores’ Drew Hackney was crowned the regional champion at No. 1 singles on Wednesday in the Division 2 regional tennis meet.

Top-seeded Hackney defeated No. 2-seed Karan Deol from Forest Hills Northern, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the title match.

For the day, the Sailors finished third with 10 points. Forest Hills Central and Forest Hills Northern each earned 19 points and finished atop the leaderboard. Greenville finished with 4 points, Reeths-Puffer and Grand Rapids Northview each had 2 while Lowell and Cedar Springs did not score.

Also at No. 1 singles, Reeths-Puffer Quinn Alderink won his opening round match then lost to Hackney, 6-0, 6-0, in the semifinal round.

At No. 2 singles, Mona Shores’ Liam Powell lost in the semifinals as did teammate Liam Gossett at No 3 singles.

At No. 4 singles, Reeths-Puffer’s Cade Paugh and Mona Shores’ Josiah Bement reached the semifinals on opposite side of the bracket before being eliminated.

The No. 1 doubles featured an opening-round battle between Reeths-Puffer’s Ethan Frang and Holden Earnest against Mona Shores’ Nathan Opfermann and Benjamin Warren. Frang and Earnest came out on top, 6-3, 7-6 (2). The Rocket duo then lost in the semifinal round.

At No. 2 doubles, Mona Shores’ Carter Dempsey and Landen Hall defeated Reeths-Puffer’s Trent VanDam and Adam Schrumpf in the first round, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. Dempsey and Hall were eliminated in the semifinals.

At No. 3 doubles, Mona Shores’ Amelia Pena and Drew Nielson won their opening-round match then lost in the semifinals as did Sailors’ Luka Ivanov and Toby Judson at No. 4 doubles.
