HOLTON – The Fruitport Calvary Christian Eagles sprinted quickly out of the gate in Monday night’s season opener in boys’ basketball.
With an unselfish offense clicking on one end of the court and a suffocating defense at the other end, the Eagles defeated the Holton Red Devils 69-41.
Quinn Swanson led the way for Fruitport Calvary with 27 points, a total that included a school-record tying six three pointers. Swanson also added eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Bradley Richards wasn’t far behind with 23 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and three steals. Sam Zelenka also had a strong game with six points and eight assists. Zach McFarren added six points and six rebounds. Eric Dubois Quayle had eight points.
Holton was led by Keon McMillan with 21 points and Hunter Zang with 16.
The Eagles jumped out to a 45-19 lead at the half and cruised to the non-league victory. That first-half surge included a 26-2 run in the opening half.
“Holton has played us tough over the years, but our guys came out ready to play for Game 1 tonight,” Calvary Christian coach Brad Richards said.
“Our coaches are real happy with our passing and talking. We have a lot of work to do, but I know our guys are looking forward to playing Fruitport next game. That’ll be a challenge.”
