MONTAGUE – The Fremont girls basketball team held off a pesky Montague squad on Friday evening, 42-34.

With strong defensive pressure, the Packers managed to create turnovers and opportunities to be up 40-18 early in the fourth quarter. However, the Wildcats found a spark and rallied to drastically cut the lead.

“I thought we came out with great energy and forced the pace to be fast,” said Fremont coach Pete Zerfas. “Our rotations are getting better each time we play and you can see the team chemistry is building by the day.”

Mia Clemence scored 14 points, five rebounds and four steals, while Jessica Bennett had 13 points, five rebounds and three steals. Olivia Hansen threw in nine rebounds and a pair of steals. Riley Chase and six steals and five points.

“I just love how hard this group works in practice and games and it is beginning to show positive results,” Zerfas said.

The Wildcats’ Addison Pranger scored 13 points. Amanda Cederquist and Avah Vandermeulen had eight and six points, respectively.

Fremont (2-1, 2-0) will compete at the Reed City Holiday Tournament on Friday, Dec. 29.

Montague (1-3, 1-2) travels to Grand Haven on Tuesday.
