JACKSON – The Montague girls wrestling team opened the season with a runner-up finish at the East Jackson Girls Wrestling Tournament on Friday.

The action went into the early morning but it wasn’t an issue for the Wildcats.

“The tournament didn’t end till about one in the morning but our girls showed tremendous grit,” said Montague coach Kris Maddox.

The Wildcats placed just behind champion Hastings with a score of 116.

Savannah Winkleblack (110), Emma Pendell (145) and Trisha Beckman (235) each earned individual titles in their respective weight classes.

Abby Thommen (130) and Ava Pelton (155) came in fifth place.

“We are so incredibly proud of each one of them and how they represented Montague today,” Maddox said. “We battled over 40 teams and the final team standing wasn’t determined until the last round of wrestling.”

Montague will host their third annual Lady Mat Cat Invitational on Friday, December 29th.
