NORTH MUSKEGON – Just three points separated Shelby and North Muskegon in girls basketball action on Tuesday. The Norsemen earned the narrow victory over the Tigers, 32-29.

Each team had their struggles scoring. North Muskegon scored 13 points in the first quarter, marking the only time all night that either team scored more than nine points in any frame.

“Another great team effort,” North Muskegon coach Jill Young said. “Playing a team with a rich tradition like Shelby is such an honor and they always show up. I love the effort this Norse team gives. It’s downright inspiring because we were outsized. Our rebounding and hustle were the difference.”

The Norsemen were led by freshman Delaney Young, who had 16 points and five rebounds. Seniors Marilyn Gaston (six points, six rebounds) and Allie Jensen (six points, five rebounds) also were key.

Shelby was led by sophomore Brylee Friedman with eight points and seven rebounds.

The Tigers (3-1, 1-1 WMC Rivers) dropped their first game of the year. The Tigers will host Hesperia on Thursday.

North Muskegon (3-0, 2–0 WMC Rivers) remains unbeaten early in the season. The Norse will get a tough test on Thursday when they host Hart for a battle with the defending conference champs.
