BRETHREN — Mason County Central struggled to keep Brethren off the boards all night, but pulled off a 55-52 non-conference win Monday night in Brethren.

Dakota Sterley led the Spartans, hitting for a game-high 21 points and adding eight rebounds. Cole VanderHaag had nine points, one steal and three boards.

Jaxson Munoz contributed two points, six rebounds and eight assists, Peyton Merz added five points and eight rebounds while Braylin Thurow finished with nine points, two assists and one steal.

The Spartans trailed, 14-12 after one and were outscored 18-11 in the second period, which increased their deficit to a 32-26 margin at the half.

Mason County still trailed, 44-37 going into the fourth after being outscored 12-11 in the third. The Spartans rallied for an 18-9 advantage in the final eight minutes.

“Jaxson Munoz had a great game tonight,” said MCC coach Chris VanderHaag. “He was able to get into their zone and find the open guy. This was the turning point. These guys are not quitters. They keep fighting. Our turnovers have been coming down, too, and I see the nerves going away.”

Mason Central moved to 4-4 on the season and travel to Montague on Thursday night for a non-conference crossover game.
