NORTON SHORES – The Western Michigan Christian girls’ basketball team had to battle back after falling behind right out of the gate on Wednesday night.

The Warriors trailed by eight points after one quarter before chipping away and ultimately earning a 42-38 victory over Grandville Calvin Christian,

The defense stepped up and helped the Warriors grab the lead then hold off Calvin Christian.

“I am so proud of how we played tonight,” said WMC coach Sarah Koetsier. “After a tough first quarter, we worked to come back and outscored Calvin in the next three quarters.

“In the final minutes, we played great defense, stayed calm, and kept the lead.”

Maria Eenigenburg scored nine points and pulled down eight rebounds for the Warriors. Tressa Arkema chipped in six points and three rebounds, while Ashley Folkema contributed 10 rebounds and six assists.

WMC (3-2, 1-0) will be at North Muskegon on Thursday, Jan. 4.
