FREMONT — Overcoming a 14-point first half deficit, the Fremont boys basketball team rallied for a 52-44 victory over Mason County Central Tuesday in Fremont.

The Packers trailed the Spartans, 28-14 at halftime, but then put down the hammer in the second, outscoring the Spartans 38-16 to surge to the win in the non-conference matchup.

Everything was rolling along for the Spartans from the start. They opened a 10-point lead on the Packers, 15-5, at the end of the first quarter and then had a 13-9 edge in the second.

But the tide turned in the second half, as the Packers exploded for a 20-5 third period that gave them the lead for good, 34-33 and they finished with a 18-11 run.

Cole VanderHaag pumped in 21 points for the Spartans and added six rebounds. Dakota Sterley scored 13 and Peyton Merz seven with nine rebounds. Jaxon Munoz led the team with five assists.

Gavin Richards scored 15 points to lead the Packers, with Chaz Miller notching 12 and John Vissia nine.

Fremont is 6-7 overall and travels to North Muskegon for another non-conference game Thursday.

The Spartans fell to 7-8 overall and host Shelby in a West Michigan Conference Rivers Division game Thursday.
