GRAND RAPIDS – The Muskegon Community College Lady Jayhawks had an enjoyable trip to Grand Rapids on Wednesday.
The Lady Jayhawks came out a bit slowly, but in the end, earned a 61-53 league victory over Grand Rapids Community College.
“Tonight was the tale of two different teams,” said MCC coach Jason Cooper. “Our first half was not one of our best. We allowed GRCC to dictate the pace.”
In the opening half, the Raiders grabbed a 30-24 lead.
Coach Cooper stressed more movement on the offensive end and to get back to basic, fundamental basketball.
The Lady Jayhawks took those words to heart and outscored the hosts 21-9 in the third quarter to take a six-point lead into the final quarter.
“In the second half, we came out with more intensity,” Cooper said. “Our ball movement in the second was an important piece to our victory.”
MCC (8-2, 2-1) was led by Ty’veonna Davis with a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds. She also had five steals. Maiya Hill also reached double figures with 14 points. She also had five rebounds and four assists.
Gaby Reeve scored eight points and pulled down six rebounds, Remi Sponseller had five points and nine rebounds and McKena Wilson had five points and three rebounds.
GRCC is now 4-11 overall, 2-2 in conference play.
The Jayhawks will host North Central at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bartels-Rode Gymnasium.
