NORTH MUSKEGON – The Western Michigan Christian girls basketball team found themselves in a close battle against North Muskegon on Thursday and came away with a 37-28 victory.

The Warriors came out with a 12-6 lead to open the first quarter, but the Norse fought back and didn’t allow a second-quarter basket to take the lead 13-12. The Norse continued to hold control after the break as the Warriors trailed by four points after three quarters of play.

The Warriors’ depth proved to be a difference as the Norse began to slow down and fall behind. Crucial free throws down the stretch allowed the Warriors to stay ahead.

“North Muskegon did a great job with pressure defense,” said WMC coach Sarah Koetsier. “We had to adjust our offense to find open looks. We did a great job handling the ball in the last few minutes of the game.  We stayed calm and took care of the ball.”

Hanna Heiss led the Warriors with 15 points and six rebounds. Ashley Folkema chipped in 13 points, five blocks, four steals and four rebounds, while Maria Eenigenburg added seven rebounds and three assists.

The Norse’s Marylin Gaston scored eight points. Delaney You, Grace Philpot and Allie Jensen contributed six points apiece.

“This was a great team win tonight,” said Koetsier.

WMC (4-2, 1-0) will travel to Martin on Tuesday.

North Muskegon (4-3, 2-1) will play host to Holton for WMC-Rivers play on Tuesday.
