GRAND RAPIDS – Despite a slow start, the North Muskegon boys’ basketball team pushed past Grand Rapids Covenant Christian, 62-54, on Friday evening.

The Norse trailed 18-13 after the first quarter and 30-24 by halftime.

“We had a hard time dealing with the speed of the game early and rushed some shots as Covenant was able to jump out front,” said North Muskegon coach Charles Rypstra. “We settled down in the second quarter and, although they outscored us, I felt we got our legs and understood how hard we had to play.”

The Norse came out of the halftime break and outscored Covenant 23-7 in the third quarter.

“We were able to hold the lead although they made major runs at us in the final quarter,” said Rypstra. “We hit free throws and had some timely baskets when they had to press out on us.”

Adam Dugener poured in 26 points for the Norse, while Jaxon Lisinski scored 13 points and made three steals. Lamarkis Graham added 10 points and James Young had seven points and five assists.

North Muskegon (18-0, 9-0) will be at home against White Cloud on Monday.
