HOWARD CITY – Lilly Holmes helped lead the Newaygo Lions to a CSAA win over Howard City Tri-County on Friday.

Holmes posted a double-double of 14 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks as the Lions won, 55-25.

“Slow start for the team tonight,” said Newaygo coach Nathan Thomasma. “We’ve been battling sickness this week with the team and the rust showed early in this game.”

The Lions jumped out to an early 16-9 lead after the first half, but Tri County fought back with a 10-0 scoring run to start the third quarter and took the lead, 19-16. However, the Lions dug deep and went on to outscore Tri County 39-6 the rest of the way.

“I’m proud that the group responded in the manner they did,” Thomasma said. “We played excellent basketball the last 12 minutes of the game.”

Amaya Lathhrop scored 12 points and snagged five steals, while Naomi Schillman added 12 points. Kija Shultz chipped in nine points and six steals.

“We, as a group, need to continue to work on being more consistent for 32 minutes. This team is a good one to be around,” said Thomasma.

Newaygo (8-7, 3-5) will travel to Orchard View on Tuesday.
