FREMONT – The Fremont boys basketball team used a strong fourth quarter push to bag a 47-44 Division 2 district semifinal win over Sparta on Wednesday night.

It was a back-and-forth first half and Sparta led 24-21 going into halftime. After the break, the Packers came out cold and Sparta went on a run to lead 40-33 with a quarter left to play.

“We challenged our kids to give everything they had left in the fourth quarter and that’s exactly what they did,” said Fremont coach Adam Bowen.

The Packers found their spark and limited Sparta to just four points in the fourth quarter.

Chaz Miller led the Packers with 14 points, eight assists and three steals. Kyler DeKuiper added nine points and seven rebounds, while Ben Mellema threw in seven points and five rebounds. Gavin Richards scored six points and pulled down six rebounds.

“I am so proud of how our kids battled and fought,” said Bowen. “We stuck together as a team and got our biggest win of the season.”

Fremont (10-14) will be back at home on Friday to face Newaygo with a district trophy up for grabs.
