FREMONT – The Fremont girls basketball team held it together on a cold shooting night to claim a key 55-45 WMC-Lakes win against Montague on Tuesday.

“We survived a horrendous shooting night with great defense and created 30 turnovers,” said Fremont coach Pete Zerfas. “We shot 14-of-65 from the floor and missed 20 free throws.”

The Packers led 35-17 going into halftime, but Montague didn’t give up without a fight. The Wildcats took advantage of the Packers’ poor shooting and made their own plays for a 17-6 scoring advantage in the third quarter.

The Wildcats continued to chip away at the Packers’ lead and managed to get the score within five points in the fourth quarter. The Packers buckled down and held it together with free throws down the stretch.

Mia Clemence led Fremont with 13 points, seven steals and five assists. Riley Chase posted a double-double of 12 points and 11 steals, while Jessica Bennett had 12 points and seven rebounds. Taylor DeKuiper added 10 points, seven rebounds and four steals for the Packers.

“Montague has improved a ton, you could see it on film, but I thought we could have put this game out of reach in the first half with better shooting and making our free throws,” said Zerfas. “We came out with great energy, we just have to finish shots.”

The Wildcats’ Addison Pranger led all scorers with 19 points, while Braylyn Bultema and Ella King scored nine and eight points, respectively.

Fremont (12-3, 8-0) will visit Orchard View on Friday for conference play.

Montague (3-12, 3-6) will be at home on Friday against North Muskegon.
