SCOTTVILLE — The Mason County Central girls overcame a sluggish start and finished with an impressive 50-26 win over Ravenna in a West Michigan Conference Rivers Division game Tuesday night.

Ravenna came to Scottville ready to play, kept the Spartans bottled up throughout much of the first quarter and gained a 9-7 edge at the buzzer.

But the Spartans hit five 3-point buckets in the second quarter and their outside shooting served to loosen up the Bulldogs’ defense.

Jessica Peterson and Hannah Thurow each drained two 3-pointers and Mallory Miller buried one to lead the Spartans to a 19-7 scoring advantage in the second period and lifted them into a 26-16 lead at the half.

The Spartans outscored the Bulldogs 10-5 in the third quarter with Wren Nelson accounting for five herself. Central headed into the fourth period with a 36-21 cushion.

Grace Weinbert had a season-high 12 points and sparked the defense at the point. Thurow added eight points and Peterson chipped in seven.

Mason County Central improved to 12-3 overall, 7-1 in the conference. The Spartans host Hart (10-3, 7-0 WMC Rivers) in a conference showdown Friday night.
