SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central’s wrestling team brought the curtain down on the home portion of its schedule Wednesday night in grand fashion, defeating both Shelby 42-30 and Holton 53-27.

It also was a combined Parent Night and Senior Night in the Spartans gym, creating a festive atmosphere.

The Spartans win over the Tigers was especially gratifying, as the Tigers have had the Spartans number several times this season.

Adding extra importance to the win was that the two teams are competitive rivals in the West Michigan Conference.

Fortunately, the Spartans had every wrestler dressed and in the lineup for the first time this season and that showed up big time when the action began.

Leading the way for the Spartans were seniors Aiden Hirschfield at 126, Zane McCabe at 138 and Brayden Overmyer at 157.. Each finished 2-0 on the night.

Hirschfield brought a huge cheer from the home fans when he recorded a pin over Daniel Thomas of Shelby in the final individual match of the dual to seal the deal.

Then he overwhelmed Holton’s Jacob Crowell and was awarded a technical fall to climax a solid individual night.

Also coming away with a pair of pins for the Spartans was McCabe, who put Shelby’s Ben Cedarquist’s shoulders to the mat and won by a fall against Holton’s D’Rico Spytma.

Overmyer dominated as well, winning by a fall over Bryce Newman of Shelby and pinning Donald Burket of Holton.

Senior 285-pounder Austin Tromp picked up a pin over Thomas Ingram of Holton. Also winning for the final time in his home gym was senior Noah Padgett at 138 with a pin fall.

Nyveah Wendt had a key win against Shelby, defeating Christian Wright with a 9-6 decision at 120.

“She had great composure in this match, and defeated a wrestler she had lost to before,” said Spartans coach Kendel Trim. “It was a tremendous effort on her part.”

The Spartans also picked up a win from underclassmen.

Junior Hunter Sanford at 126, freshman William Thomsen at 144 and sophomore Parker Overmyer at 175 finished their home season with victories.

Central travels to Whitehall on Friday for the WMC tournament, which is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. at the VAC.
