BRETHREN — Mason County Eastern girls basketball team was playing at a size disadvantage when the Cardinals traveled to Brethren for a West Michigan D League game.

The Cardinals played the Bobcats tough early, but couldn’t keep it up and eventually lost a 62-27 decision on Wednesday.

“The girls came out and played a tough first half, and really fought well on both ends of the court,” said Eastern coach Jake Smith. “We were a step behind in the second half, and Brethren’s quickness and speed pushed them out in front of us. The girls worked hard with different lineups in and functioned well as a team.”

The Bobcats smoved out in front, 17-12 at the end of the first quarter. The Cardinals then were outscored 16-9 in the second and trailed, 33-21 at the half.

The Bobcats dominated the second half and outscored the Cardinals 29-6 over the final 16 minutes. Eastern scored only one point in the fourth.

Kennady Tyler and Eline Sendstad scored eight points apiece to lead the Cardinals.

Grace Kidd tossed in 16 points to lead the Bobcats, while Alice Amstutz contributed 12 and Stella Estes added 10.

Eastern dropped to 3-12 overall, 3-8 in the league, and hosts Mesick in a WMD game on Friday night.
