NEWAYGO – The Fremont girls’ basketball team sent Sparta packing on Wednesday after a 45-32 victory in a Division 2 district semifinal contest.

The Packers got off to a slow start and trailed 8-0 early in the contest, but climbed out of their early hole and were behind 10-8 after one quarter.

Fremont took the lead in the second quarter and led 21-18 at halftime and 35-28 through three quarters of play.

The Packers made 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Fremont was paced by Riley Chase with 17 points and eight steals while Jessica Bennett stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, seven rebounds and seven blocks.

Khaila Noordyk played well off the bench for the Packers with six points and nine rebounds. Taylor DeKuiper chipped in seven steals and seven rebounds.

Fremont will play Grant at 7 p.m. Friday with a district title at stake.

The Packers 19-4 on the season.
