NEWAYGO – A tale of two halves saw Newaygo’s boys basketball team come out on top of Shelby 73-60 on Monday.

Turnovers have plagued the Tigers all year, so only having six in the first half was a huge success and a big reason Shelby held an advantage at halftime.

Newaygo quickly flipped the script on them, getting points in the paint and forcing 11 second-half turnovers to grab the pace and the lead.

The Lions were led by Caris Nelson with 24 points and seven assists while Josiah Long had 16 points. Logan Klomp added 13 points.

Shelby was paced by Eli Kelley with 18 points and Lalo Garcia, who recorded 14 points and nine rebounds. Wyatt Dickman had 12 points and eight rebounds while Trey Waller scored six.

Newaygo (12-7, 6-3 CSAA) will get their final regular-season game in the books on Friday when they travel to Big Rapids. The CSAA conference tournament is set for the following week.

Shelby (3-14, 1-7 WMC Rivers) has now lost four straight and has a meeting with unbeaten North Muskegon on Tuesday.
