ROCKFORD – The Muskegon girls basketball team overpowered Reeths-Puffer, 61-27, in the opening round of the Division 1 district tournament on Monday night.

The Big Reds opened with a 15-10 lead in the first quarter then kept but the Rockets scoreless in the second quarter to lead 26-10 at halftime. The lead continued to grow as the Big Reds outscored the Rockets 35-17 over the last two quarters.

Camiyah Bonner led the way for the Big Reds with a game-high 21 points. Jaila Martin put up 16 points and Mariah Sain added 15. 

The Rockets’ Brooklyn Tornes scored 17 points and pulled down three rebounds, while Irelyn Nicklasch had four points and eight rebounds.

Muskegon (18-5) will face Rockford at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the district semifinals. 

Reeths-Puffer closed out the season 9-13.
