SPARTA – The Spring Lake girls basketball team cruised to a 58-27 win over Fremont in the semifinal round of the Division 2 regional tournament on Monday night.

The Lakers took a quick 15-2 first-quarter lead and never let up. The Packers made a few short runs in the third quarter.

“We advanced to the regional finals for the first time in program history,” said Spring Lake coach Rich Hyde. “This year is the seventh time a Spring Lake girls basketball team advanced to a regional, but the first time they advanced to the final game.”

Alexa Carter led a balanced attack for the Lakers with a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. Ellia Wrona added 12 points and Ella Andree chipped in 11 points. Mia Theune scored seven points.

The Packers’ Taylor DeKuiper scored nine points, while Jessica Bennett and Mia Clemence put up seven and six points, respectively.

Spring Lake (18-6) will return to Sparta at 7 p.m. Wednesday to take on Grand Rapids West Catholic, a 44-31 winner of Hudsonville Unity Christian in the other semifinal.

Fremont closed out the season 20-5.

“The loss doesn’t diminish from the historic season our girls had though,” said Fremont coach Pete Zerfas. “We finished with the most wins in 46 years and second-most in program history. We went undefeated in league play at 12-0, we won the first outright conference championship in 46 years and first district title since 2009.

“Tonight wasn’t our night, but our girls have a lot to be proud of,” said Zerfas.
