FREMONT — The Hart Pirates captured the first competitive cheer jamboree for the West Michigan Conference season Wednesday night in Fremont. Hart finished with 654.24 points, just ahead of runner-up Mason County Central’s 651.34.

Ludington took third, followed by North Muskegon, Whitehall, Montague, Fremont, Shelby, Ravenna and Oakridge in the initial jamboree.

The Spartans are led by seniors Emily Adams and Marissa Quillan, while the remainder of the team is made up of freshmen and they improved their previous score at last Saturday’s meet in Comstock Park by 45 points.

In Round 1, the Spartans had a 207.1-205 lead over the Pirates, spurred by a solid effort in the jumps. They won Round 2, 1787.34-1174.44, with both teams penalized 10 points for not putting enough competitors on the mat.

“We were able to put back walkovers, and front walkovers in the round which are upper level skills, but are not yet maxed out on possible points like Hart,” Spartans coach Cheri Stibitz said. “Our round three is one of the areas in which we need more practice and are again not maxed out on our total points, where Hart is.”

The Spartans scored 265.69 points in the round, while Hart notched 274.5 for the final placement.
