CUSTER — Mason County Eastern lost a West Michigan D League doubleheader to Brethren at home Monday afternoon, 12-1 and 16-9.

MCE’s Miley Kessel pitched five innings in the opener, giving up eight hits while walking four and striking out 14.

Eline Schulstad drove in the Cardinals’ only run.

In the nightcap, the Cardinals again sent Kessel out to the circle and she threw five innings and was touched for 15 hits, three walks and nine strikeouts.

Kessel and Kennady Tyler had two hits apiece for the Cardinals, while Remington Smith, Braylin Johnson, Hannah Kluth and Avery Crawford each contributed one hit.

“Even though we came up short, these girls came out to play,” said MCE coach Jennifer Whitaker. “They worked hard and got to see some good looks at the plate against Kadence Delore, but got our bats moving just a little late in the game.”

MCE travels to Mesick for another WMD twinbill Thursday.
