NORTON SHORES – The Mona Shores boys lacrosse team downed powerhouse Spring Lake, 12-7, on Thursday evening.

The Sailors were up 6-2 after the first quarter but Spring Lake managed to cut it down to 8-6 by halftime.

“The second quarter was all Spring Lake,” said Mona Shores coach Murle Greer. “They owned us in ground balls and time of possession. They have some great players and if you give them chances, they are going to score.”

The Sailors buckled down the defense and managed the clock in the second half and pulled ahead.

“We are down a bunch of guys right now and we had to constantly make adjustments in the game and move guys between positions,” said Greer. “However, they held some of the best players in the area to season-low production.”

Ezra Carafelle led the attack with a hat trick and an assist for Mona Shores. Dylan Fett netted a pair of goals, while Cullen Conrad had a goal and an assist. Micah Carafelle, Hayden Terpstra, Gavin Collins, Jaedin Turner and Tyson Terpstra each added a score.

Conner Osterhart threw in an assist and Madden Flanders led in ground balls with four in the Sailors’ win.

Ben Warren made eight saves in the net for the Sailors.

“Ben set the tone and made some great saves early that helped us build the early lead,” said Greer. “He was great.”

Mona Shores (4-6, 3-2) will be at Byron Center on Friday for a makeup game from the previous postponement.

“We needed a win, but more importantly we needed to play good lacrosse,” Greer said. “Most importantly, we needed to have fun, and this was fun.”
