TRAVERSE CITY – The Mona Shores’ boys lacrosse team made a successful trip north on Saturday.

The Sailors brought home a hard-fought 5-3 victory over Traverse City in a low-scoring affair.

Mona Shores came into the match short a few players, mostly in the midfield. However, Coach Murle Greer made some adjustments that filled in the gaps.

“This was a solid win for us,” Greer said. “This was really our first close game of the year. I am very glad to see that we can win a close one. Those close games really test your decision making and your game IQ and that is where we have struggled in the past. We are very proud of the guys for finishing a game like this one.”

Solid defense also helped carry the Sailors to the victory.

“We had really great communication on the defensive side and had a couple strong individual efforts that shut down their top players,” Greer said. “Andrew Baker’s footwork at defense stifled the attacks game plan.  All of our poles are very talented, but Andrew plays the position as well as anyone in the state.”

Ryan Kuhn also had a strong game in the middle of the field.

Goalie Matt Tallman stepped in and played a strong game. He made 14 saves and was lauded as the Sailors player of the game.

“We are in a split time situation with our goalies right now, but when you have a hot goalie, you leave him in,” Greer said. “Matt kept us in that game and gave us the chance to win.”

Junior Ezra Carefelle had two goals and one assist. Dylan Fett, Cullen Conrad and Jaedin Turner each had a goal.

Mona Shores is at Zeeland at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
