NORTON SHORES – The Mona Shores girls’ lacrosse team managed to hang on for a 15-13 win in a league matchup against West Ottawa on Friday.

The Sailors were firing on all cylinders early and led 11-4 by the half.

“We played our style of play, pushing the ball, making great decisions and putting the ball in the back of the net,” said Mona Shores coach Chip Vasquez.

However, the momentum shifted in the last two quarters, as the Sailors became gassed and West Ottawa nearly rallied back.

“The second half was a different story,” said Vasquez. “We were short-handed because of injuries and sickness, players playing out of position and our middies never coming off. They ran forever.”

The Sailors’ defense stepped up and held off West Ottawa from stealing the lead.

Lainee Carmean had the stat line of the night with five goals, 10 ground balls and six draw controls. Reese Smith had three goals, three ground balls and three draw controls, while Emma Reelman added three goals and an assist.

Cambree Bowen chipped in two scores. Also, Jordyn Briseno and Madelyn Warren each scored a goal.

“I’m proud of them,” Vasquez said. “They stayed composed throughout West Ottawa’s run. We gave up six consecutive goals, but our goaltender and defense came up with some big stops late in the fourth.”

Mona Shores will compete in the Dewitt Play Day on Saturday.
