FRUITPORT — What a difference a year makes.
After going 5-7 a year ago in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Fruitport Calvary Christian girls basketball has now doubled that win total at the midway point of this season after Thursday night’s 45-35 comeback win over Tri-Unity Christian in the Alliance League.
The Eagles are now 10-1 this season, and Thursday’s win added to their confidence.
Fruitport Calvary started the game sluggish, and trailed Tri-Unity by two points, 8-6 at the end of the first quarter. Despite getting their offense to mesh a little more in the second period, the Eagles still found themselves on the short end of a 20-17 score at halftime.
The Eagles shifted offensively in the third quarter and used a 13-9 advantage to take a 30-29 lead at the end of three.
It all came together for the Eagles in the fourth quarter, as the defense took center stage in holding the Defenders to just six points while scoring 15 points themselves to pull away.
McKena Wilson enjoyed a big night for the Eagles, pumping in 17 points along with seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Cate Anhalt also scored 17 points for the Eagles, and added five rebounds and four steals.
Nora Pollock contributed four points, five rebounds and four assists in the victory.
The Eagles picked up their 10th straight win and improved to 10-1 on the season and 4-0 in the league. Next up for Fruitport Calvary Christian is a Tuesday, Feb. 8 contest against conference foe Kentwood Grand River Prep.
