Sometimes things aren’t always the way they appear. That’s how it was for the Muskegon Lumberjacks on Friday night.
The Lumberjacks had a commanding 2-0 first period lead over Eastern Conference leader Chicago and looked like they were going to get two points from the first-place Steel.
But three unanswered goals by Chicago spoiled Muskegon’s hopes on Fury Night, as the Lumberjacks fell 3-2 in front of 1,783 fans.
Quinn Hutson put Muskegon on the board nearly two minutes into the game off a Jake Richard assist. Jacob Braccin gave Muskegon a 2-0 lead off of a Ben Strinden helper.
Chicago responded with a goal just before the end of the first period and put up goals in the second and third periods.
Muskegon outshot the Steel 26-21 and played discipline hockey, giving up just five penalties on the night.
The difference was Chicago tallied an extra man-avantage goal, scoring twice off of Muskegon penalties.
The loss drops Lumberjacks four points behind first-place Chicago who has 58 while they stay a point ahead of Dubuque’s 53 points.
Muskegon honored Fury great Todd Robinson by retiring his number into the rafters after hosting a cerimony honoring Robinson’s storied carrer.
Muskegon is now 24-13-3-3 and will look to pick up two points from Chicago again on Saturday night.
