LUDINGTON — Ludington’s girls volleyball team reached the finals of its own invitational on Friday, where the Orioles fell to Shelby in two sets, 25-19, 26-24.

It was the Orioles first action of the season, and head coach Liz Holden was quite impressed with their performance through the long day that started at 10 a.m.

The Orioles went undefeated in pool play, defeating Reed City (25-18, 25-19), Pine River (25-13, 25-18) and Beaverton (25-22, 25-23).

“We played a lot of good volleyball today,” Holden said. “We found ourselves up against a great team in the finals. We went into the game with one goal, to shut down their big hitter.

“But, she was just on and playing around our blockers. We missed quite a few serves, which really hurt us. I am getting to know these girls, and where they are strong and where they need work.

“I am happy with how they pulled together today. This is a great group of athletes, with the height coaches can only wish for. We know what we need to work on, and I think as the season progresses, so will we.”

Maddy Mesyar paced the Orioles with 37 kills, 7 digs, 6 aces and 6 blocks. Ashley McPike had 7 kills, 4 blocks and 1 assist. Mia Voss had 3 kills and 3 blocks.

Karli Mesyar contributed 9 digs, 23 assists and 3 aces. Olivia Lynn finished with 5 kills, 2 blocks and 2 digs. Jordyn Anderson had 8 aces, 38 assists and 10 blocks.

Mia Pung added 3 aces,13 digs and 3 assists and Keelyn Laird contributed 23 kills, 9 aces, 1 assist, 3 blocks and 10 digs. Jordyn Anderson finished with 11 kills.
