Yankees 5, Tigers 4– The New York Yankees held on to defeat the Tigers in a makeup game on Thursday night.
The Tigers had the bases loaded down by two runs with nobody out, but J.D. Martinez hit into a double play and Miguel Cabrera ended the contest with a groundout.
Detroit led 1-0 after four innings, the Yankees tied the game 1-1 in the sixth and scored four runs in the seventh inning to take 5-1 advantage.
The Tigers chipped away their deficit to one run with single tallies in the seventh, eighth and ninth inning.
The Yankees were paced by Jacoby Ellsbury with a triple and three RBIs while Robert Refsnyder chipped in with a double and an RBI.
Ian Kinsler and Mike Aviles each doubled and knocked in a run for Detroit while Justin Upton chipped in with an RBI.
Detroit’s starting pitcher Matt Boyd picked up his first loss of the season, allowing four runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings.
The Tigers are now 25-28 on the season, good for fourth place in the American League Central Division behind the Kansas City Royals.
Detroit will open a three-game weekend series against the Chicago White Sox starting on Friday night.
